The Compaq R3000 is a very common laptop I see in for repair and uses the same chassis as the equally problematic hp zv5000. The R3000 uses a four pin, 2.5mm dc jack that a lot of other laptops use.
The most common R3000 dc jack symptom is when you can wiggle or prop the ac adapter plug just the right way to get it to charge. If you're experiencing this please stop right away because you can cause further damage to the laptop motherboard and a dc jack repair won't be possible.
The reason the wiggle effect happens is over time the back voltage pin heats up enough to cause the solder to crack or break around the jack. This causes such a small break in the solder that wiggling the ac adapter plug will make the connection again

Removing power button bezel from the right side of the keyboard.
Compaq R3000 with power button bezel removed. Keyboard screws are now exposed and ready for removal.
Carefully removing the keyboard ribbon cable from the motherboard.
Now the two screws on each side can be removed to take off the LCD.

The four motherboard screws need to be removed on the R3000 motherboard.
The docking station screws on the Compaq R3000 need to be taken off with a flathead screwdriver.
The motherboard lifted out and the bottom of the cpu screws can be removed.
Flip the board over and remove the cpu heatsink screws.
The fan wires need to be removed from the motherboard.
Now you have just the motherboard exposed and the dc jack repair can begin. Notice that not much solder is used in the initial factory solder job.
All the solder has been removed and the old dc jack has been taken out.
New dc jack installed and I use a lot more solder to keep this Compaq R3000 going for years to come.
The laptop has been reassembled and the charge light comes on showing the dc jack repair was a succes,
